Here are 5 apps we find useful to use in Iceland. Let us know if you know of any other useful ones you have used:
Aurora Forecast
This app forecasts current likelihood of seeing the northern lights. Along with forecasted cloud cover, it lets you find the best spots for seeing the Aurora.
Nordic Navi
Nordic Navi has an offline compendium of sights, restaurants, hotels and things to do in Iceland. For all items, there are links to the respective websites, opening hours and telephone numbers.
Slow Shutter
Slow shutter allows you to adjust your phone’s shutter speed to better capture pictures in very low light conditions. This is useful when you try to take an image of the Aurora.
Sky View
There are plenty of sky view apps available – but this one is free and works just as well as the paid ones.
112 Iceland
Official app from the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue. It has two features: if you’re in trouble, it will send your current location via text message to the Icelandic search and rescue (SAR) teams so that they may come to your help. You can also use it to merely “check in” with the SAR teams to inform them of your location and let them know your hiking/trekking plans.
Informative websites
Road condition webcams – to see the conditions on the roads before you head out
Safetravel – Official SAR website – the go-to website for safe travels in Iceland. Informs you of severe weather warnings and you can leave your travel plans with them in advance (and they are the makers of the 112 Iceland app)
Icelandic Meteorological Office – for the most detailed weather forecast
Map of hiking trails and mountain huts in Iceland – browse through potential hiking trails and find out which mountain huts are along the way
